Sarah Ball, the supervising librarian at the Rikers Island New York Public Library branch, says the most sought-after materials at her location are comic books. The incarcerated readers–both men and women–get lost in the stories. Ball thinks the comics remind the inmates of home and of their youth, providing comfort and entertainment in a difficult environment.
